Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus || Spoken Word
11 Jan 2012 / 4 Comments / in Miscellaneous/by Three Thirty

Thank God for YouTube, and thank God for free time viewing stuff on YouTube.

I believe his name is Jefferson Bethke, and his medium of spreading the word of God is YouTube (of course, and our medium at Three Thirty is tees). But the way he does it is absolutely awesome! As Christians in Three Thirty, we believe that Christianity should not be seen as a religion, but should be seen as a relationship between God and us. We are not meant to be bound by rules and regulations and traditions, but we are bound by freedom.

This is his rhythm and rhyme. I took the time to manuscript his lyrical conviction, because it is soooo fantastic.

What if I told you Jesus came to abolish religion.
What if I told you voting Republican, really wasn’t His mission.
What if I told you Republican doesn’t automatically mean Christian
and just because you call some people blind, doesn’t automatically give you vision.
I mean if religion is so great, why has it started so many wars?
Why does it build huge churches, but fail to feed the poor?
Tell single moms God doesn’t love them if they have ever had a divorce,
but in the old testament, God actually calls religious people whores.
Religion might preach grace, but another thing they practice.
Tend to ridicule God’s people, they did it to John the Baptist.
They can’t fix their problems and so they mask it,
without realising it’s like spraying perfume on a casket.
See the problem with religion, is that it never gets to the core.
It’s just behaviour modification like a long list of chores.
Like let’s dress up the outside to make it look nice and neat,
but that’s funny coz that’s what they used to do to mummies while the corpse rots underneath.
Now I ain’t judging, I’m just saying, quit putting on a fake look.
Coz it’s a problem if people only know you’re a Christian through your Facebook.
I mean in every other aspect of life, you know that logic’s are worthy.
It’s like saying you play for the Lakers, just because you bought their jersey.
See this was me too, but no one seemed to be on to me.
Acting like a church kid, but addicted to pornography.
See on Sunday I’d go to church but Saturday getting faded,
acting like I was simply created to have sex and get wasted.
See I spent my whole life building this facade of neatness,
But now that I know Jesus, I boost in my weakness.
Because of Grace is like water, then the church should be an ocean.
It’s not a museum for good people, it’s a hospital for broken.
Which means I don’t have to hide my failure I don’t have to hide my sin,
because it doesn’t depend on me, it depends on him.
See when I was God’s enemy, and certainly not a fan,
He looked down on and said “I want that man”.
Which is why Jesus hated religion and forty  he called them fools.
Don’t you see so much better, then just following some rules?
Let me clarify, I love the church I love the bible and yes I believe in sin.
But if Jesus came to your church, would they actually let him in?
See he was called a glutton and a drunkard by religious man,
but the son of God never supported self-righteousness, not now, not then.
Now back to the point, one thing is vital to mention,
how Jesus and religion, are on opposite spectrums.
See one’s the work of God, and one’s a man-made invention.
See one is the cure, the other’s an infection.
Religion says do,
Jesus says done.
Religion says slave,
Jesus says son.
Religion puts you in bondage, Jesus sets you free.
Religion makes you blind, Jesus makes you see.
That’s why religion and Jesus, are two different clans.
Religion is man searching for God,
Christianity is God searching for man.
Which is why salvation is freely mine, and forgiveness is my own.
Not based on my merits, but Jesus’ obedience alone.
Because he took the crown of thorns and the blood dripped down his face.
He took away all we deserved, I guess it’s why you call it grace.
While being murdered he yelled “Father forgive them, they know now what they do”,
because as he was dangling from that cross, he was thinking of YOU.
He absorbed all your sin, and He buried it in the tomb
that’s why I’m kneeling at the cross saying “come on, there’s room”.
So for religion, no I hate it. In fact I literally resent it.
Because when Jesus said “IT IS FINISHED”, I believe he meant it.

Do share this if you feel the need to share it. But this is not my work, it is the work of Jefferson. You can view the original video here.
I really applaud him for what he has done, and what he is doing. Kristos Kai Kosmos. BE THE CULTURE!!

PS: Special thanks to Dylan from United Records for helping to fix the video playback issue. PROPS! =)

The video is indeed catchy but unfortunatley very unbiblical. I Aplaud his zeal but must point out that it is not ccording to knowledge. The Bible clearly tells us what religion is supposed to look like. God defined religion in James 1:26-27. james actualy uses the word. In fact the entirty of James is written to teach us how our relgion is to be practiced. It is a controled tounge, looking out for the helpless and keeping oneself unstained from the world. It is very clear in the KJV. This enthusiatic young man has fallen into the same trap that so many have fallen into. He has allowed the world to define the words and is arguing from the world view of the ungodly. The world does not like Gods definition so what it does is it redefines the word and shoots it down from it’s straw man approach. There is not doubt that salvation is manifested thru obedience to the word that results in good works. That is our religious duty as christians. Any thing else short of this is falling short of how the bible defines religion. Remember that God in james is not only defining religion but is also telling us how it is to be practiced. What this young man is unwittingly doing is violating Gods rules governing religion. By letting the world define what it is he has become stained by the world and in reality is violating the very word of God that he is trying to promote. Religion is good. It is very good for it is how God directs our lives. Any religion that is not inaccord with James and the entirity of the word does not meet the criteria for religion. Just like math is not math if it does not follow the rules of math as set forth by logic. Religion is not religion if it does not fit the criteria as defined in James. All else is paganism. That is what the Bible calls it. What this young man should be asking is why do we let the world define the words and terms and set the rules for the debate.

I would have to agree with you Schooldadwinchester. Jeff argues from a worldly point of view. And yes I agree that the bible’s definition of ‘religion’ and the world’s point of view of ‘religion’ is very different. But I guess from Jeff’s point of vie, he is apealling to the unchurched, and he’s trying to tell the truth to the Pharisees of our generation. To a pharisee, religion is basically acting Godly on the outside, but being really filthy on the inside. I see Jeff more like a Daniel of our generation, being in the world, but not of the world. Preaching the gospel through a wordly medium, but not diluting the message. Right?

I understand where School and Jeremiah is coming from, however this is my personal testimony,

I had the religion down-pat, I went to church every Sunday, sometimes 3 times a week, go to cell, don’t smoke, never got drunk, don’t cuss, I pray, read the bible and because I am not overtly religious, I even thought I was not self-righteous. But I was an utter fool, I was trying so hard to help myself into salvation that I had rejected  the cross. Yes I knew that Jesus died to set me free from sin, yet I continued to strive in my own flesh to be righteous. It comes in subtly like how I feel in better standing with God if I had fulfilled a certain religious act like praying or reading my bible than being focused and relying consistently and solely on Jesus for my salvation.

Religion only is a good moral guide because it provides the Law that points us towards and convicts us on the standard that God will judge our lives. Yet without the revealed knowledge and the full (yes full and only) faith in Jesus’ work on the cross we will NEVER be considered righteous. Just as Paul the Apostle said in Phillipians 3: 4 – 9
“If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more:
    5circumcised
on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a
    Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee;
6as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law,c blameless.
7But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ.
    8Indeed,
I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing
Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all
things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ
    9and
be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from
the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness
from God that depends on faith.”

The eternally important question is not “Is the practice of religion good?” but “Why do you practice religion?” Is Jesus and the Gospel the central focus of why you do what you do? If not, like in my case, my own deceitful heart has become a stain before the Lord. I was trying to do Gospel + religious acts to reach God, but that would mean I said to my Messiah, “You are not enough for my salvation, I need to meet you halfway”. But that is not the Gospel, for it is only by faith in Christ’s work on the cross that we are justified and is considered by God as righteous as recounted in the roll-call of people in Hebrews 11 deemed by God as righteous. Our good deeds and our communion and fellowship with fellow believers will then spring forth from the grace that the Lord our God has shown us.

Bball1989′s video woke my spirit from its stupor. I was offended, I was outraged and I was convicted. Today this is my testimony and my soul will sing of nothing else when I meet my Beloved Saviour.
